In this year 2024-2025, the challenge we are launching focuses on projects of Digital Transformation in Occupational Health and Safety, focused on improving working conditions in SMEs and Micro SMEs, developed in Universities of Madrid during the academic years 2022-2025.
SMEs and Micro SMEs represent 99% of the business fabric in Europe and are responsible for employing more than 85 million people. However, the implementation of Occupational Risk Prevention (ORP) measures in these companies is a significant challenge.
Although article 19 of the Law on the Prevention of Occupational Risks requires all companies to ensure preventive training, many SMEs, with few employees and limited economic resources, find it difficult to invest in occupational safety systems and to provide adequate training to their workers.
SMEs and Micro-SMEs account for approximately one third of the total number of occupational accidents in Europe. Reflecting the direct repercussions of the limitations these companies face in the field of Occupational Health and Safety.
This high accident rate in companies has a direct impact on the lives of workers and their families as well as on the economy, generating additional costs in terms of health care, sick leave and lost productivity.
